After a successful 10-year stint as a medical massage practitioner in Long Island, when she moved to Bluffton, Heidi Johnson had no plans to continue working in that field.

"I had done medical and sports rehab, which is very difficult to do," she said. "I thought I just couldn't do it anymore."

While an estimated 2.5 to 4 million gallons of oil per day continues to gush into the Gulf of Mexico from BP's damaged rig there, along the coast of the Lowcountry of South Carolina, at least one oysterman remains optimistic that the spill will not affect Bluffton's beloved May River.

Okatie Elementary School recently added a classroom to its campus, but it wasn't built of bricks of mortar, and it was not inside the building.

Thanks to Tyler Frey, a former Okatie student and an aspiring Eagle Scout, the new learning space was constructed by volunteers in a clearing behind the school. Frey built an outdoor classroom as part of a requirement to earn the title of Eagle Scout.

In her 11 years as a massage therapist, Tiffany Anisette treated many women who suffered from upper back, shoulder and neck pain. She knew from experience the effects of carrying the weight of a handbag, and sometimes the world, on one's shoulders.

She set out to create a multi-purpose bag that would ease the pain but still be fashionable and help accomplish all the tasks that many women must complete in a day.

When 80 individuals showed up for a meeting promising information about a potential free health clinic in the Bluffton area and seeking volunteers to help run it, Jennifer Brown was elated.

Brown and a small corps of additional volunteers are seeing community support, additional volunteers, and approvals from various official entities to build a Volunteers in Medicine clinic on the mainland, either in Bluffton or Hardeeville.

A businesswoman who inquired at Town Hall about the rules regarding such enterprises in Bluffton might have sealed her own fate by being forthcoming about her plans.

The Town of Bluffton's committee that doles out local taxes on inn, hotel and motel accommodations to organizations for promoting tourism and attracting visitors here just found the pie a little more difficult to slice.

The year-long economic downturn has caused a 10 percent shortfall in accommodations tax (also known as A-tax or bed tax) revenue in the Town of Bluffton in this most recent quarter, ending Sept. 30, according to A-tax committee members and town officials.
